Wind turbines use the wind to produce electricity. The entire process behind the wind turbine is simple. Wind provides the force but aerodynamics makes the blades spin. The rotational energy is transfered to the rotor hub. The hub of the rotor is attached to the shaft which provides high torque rotation to a generator. The permanent magnet generator converts kinetic energy into DC electricity.

The amount of energy generated through your wind turbine depends on the wind flow speed and patterns in your local area, which can vary drastically depending on where you live in the world.

Horizontal axis wind turbines

This is the original type of wind turbine. As the name suggests the shaft or axle runs on a horizontal plane. Bang for buck the horizontal wind turbine gives you more Kilowatts for every buck! This type of turbine also gives you more return for your money. But unlike the Vertical Wind Turbine, it needs to be pointed into the wind. When the wind changes direction the HWT needs to be turned so it is pointed into the wind. This is done by a tail fin which is forced to point downwind whenever the wind blows. Large industrial wind turbines maintain upwind orientation via electric motors and a control board. The turning of the wind turbine is called’ YAW CONTROL’.

Horizontal Wind Turbines require clean wind so needs to be mounted high on a tower. A huge strain is placed upon the tower so it must be immensely strong. Small domestic wind turbines are OK mounted on a mast and cable tethers.

Vertical axis wind turbines

The Vertical Axis Wind Turbine or VAWT for short is an ideal solution for positions where the wind is irregular. Not as efficient as the HAWT but it can cope with poor wind locations. The vertical wind turbine can be a good solution when a low line position is the only option. 

A merry go round can maintain momentum with a simple flick every so often a so can a VAWT. Pulsing wind force can flick the vertical turbine and maintain the revolutions. A HAWT drastically slows when the wind is intermittent.

How do wind turbines work

Wind turbines function by capturing kinetic energy from the wind then converting it into mechanical energy. The conversion happens by way of an internal shaft that rotates the generator via the gearbox, in turn, produces electricity. Wind Turbine Technology

Types of Wind Energy

There are three main types of wind energy; it’s essential to understand the differences between them before installing one on your property. These classifications help regulatory agencies maintain control over the generation of home contributed home-produced energy. The size of your wind turbine and the amount of power it produces determines which wind energy class you’ll be assigned.

  • Distributed wind (small wind)- wind turbines with less than 100 kilowatts used to provide power to a home, small business, or farm not connected to the primary electrical grid.
  • Utility-Scale Wind- any wind turbine with a power range of 100 kilowatts up to numerous megawatts. Wind power generated from these turbines is delivered directly to the power grid, then distributed to individual users.
  • Offshore Wind- wind power system installed in a large body of water. Commonly, you find these type of wind turbines on the continental shelf.
